Somewhere, across the universe, this is happening right now: In a loose confederation of two hundred and forty-seven inhabited stars known as the Serrll Combine, the scheming rulers of star clusters known as the Sargon Directorate and the Palean Union seek to dominate the Serrll. A small handful of independent star systems resist them, led by Pizgor’s three worlds. In a clandestine attempt to destroy Pizgor’s economy and bring it to its knees, the two rulers send unmarked warships to raid cargo ships entering or leaving Pizgor territory. Desperate, Pizgor issues a plea for help from the Serrll Combine’s ruling Council. The Serrll Scout Fleet assigns Second Scout Terrllss-rr to discover the location of a suspected secret base from which raiders are thought to operate and eliminate it. Escorting a Pizgor cargo vessel, Terr is engaged in a desperate battle with two enemy ships. The exchange leaves Terr’s soul scarred and his ship battered. With a new ship, he captures a raider and finds the proof that locates the enemy base, linking the raiders to the Palean Union. But the encounter is not over and an elaborate trap brings Terr into action with an old nemesis, the commander of the raider fleet.
